Gchi-twaawendimong Ezhi-wiijikiiwendimong Gchi-twaa-nibi Celebrating our Relationships With Water

March 20 to March 23, 2014

First Peoples House of Learning Trent University, Peterborough, Ontario

Welcome to the 2014

Indigenous Women’s Symposium

Indigenous Women around the world continue to deal with ongoing colonialism within our homelands. The cumulative impacts continue to affect our physical, cultural, and spiritual levels of being as women as we struggle to maintain our relationships and responsibilities. One of the areas of most concern to Indigenous women across the planet is our relationship with water. In an Anishinaabeg context, Nibi, (water) is sacred and women have particular responsibilities where it is concerned. Women’s relationships and knowledges about water are missing from mainstream academic scholarship and settler society in general. Some Indigenous communities and organizations, on the other hand, are actively working to recover and restore those knowledges as necessary mechanism for survivance as Indigenous Nations.

The 2014 Indigenous Women’s Symposium will celebrate Indigenous women’s relationships with water at all levels and bring together women and allies from the four directions to discuss the importance of water for our physical, cultural, and spiritual wellbeing.

This shawl represents water relationships and is being auctioned off at the symposium. All proceeds will be going to support the water walk happening in May on Mother’s Day. Tickets are $5.00 and you can purchase them here by clicking on the button above or at the symposium registration desk. The winning ticket will be picked on Sunday

March 23. You do not have to be present to win!
